The State Commissioner of Environment and Climate Change Dr Dahiru Mohammed Hashim has today led a sanitation team from the Ministry of Environment for Friday end of month supervision exercise for Market Places, Motor parks and MDAs respectively.
The commissioner observed with dismay some of the unhealthy situation in some state facilities and called for immediate cleanup.
During the inspection, the commissioner visited critical areas such as Operating Theatres to verify proper cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization protocols as well as the incinerator site within the hospital.
"We decided today to visit some of our hospitals in Kano to assess the quality of their environment. We have seen some facilities in a very dilapidated condition,” he stated.
“Our aim is to ensure that people coming for medical care do not end up contracting other diseases or infections. We visited Waziri Shehu Gidado General Hospital, Bachirawa, Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, and Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital to evaluate their hygiene standards, particularly their toilets, general surroundings, and waste disposal sites.”
Dr. Hashim condemned the poor sanitation conditions in some government hospitals, describing them as unacceptable.
“I don’t need to mention names, but what we saw in certain places is completely unacceptable. We have served them with abatement notices, instructing them to resolve these issues within the week,” he said.
He also criticized the unsafe handling of hospital waste, stressing that some facilities were openly burning refuse, including biomedical waste, without proper sorting.
Responding ,the Chief Medical Director of Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital, Professor Hadiza Sa’id Bala, expressed appreciation for the commissioner’s visit.
She acknowledged that the hospital currently has a limited number of toilets but assured that the government is constructing additional facilities.
“We will double our efforts to improve sanitation and ensure the hospital remains clean,” she stated.
