The State Government has expressed worries over the influxes of vehicles especially the tricycle (A daidaita Sahu) during the end of Month sanitation hours, pledged strict measures against Violators.
The State Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change Dr Dahiru Mohammed Hashim disclosed this today during the Saturday general Environmental sanitation exercise within Kano metropolis.
The Commissioner who announced plans to block some major roads leading to the state during the sanitation hours to ensure total compliance and prevent travellers from entering the state within the stipulated time, he stressed. He noted significant gaps for waste management and called for immediate intervention to address the ugly trends.
He pointed out that, the issue of vehicle movement during the sanitation hours coming to Kano especially from outsiders violating our laws would not be accepted anymore, hence they need strong measures next time, he added.
The Commissioner also faulted some motor parks that failed to adhere with the provision of the sanitation laws, by remaining open during the sanitation exercise. "Some motor parks despite the radio announcements still continue with their normal business operation during these hours, which is unacceptable. We will take a drastic measure next time to ensure total compliance.
He urged residents to participate actively in the exercise and maintain a clean environment for their own good.
"Dr Hashim further explained that the Government is committed to providing a healthy and clean environment for its citizens. We appeal to all residents to join hands with us in maintaining a clean and hygienic environment," Dr. Hashim said.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner lauded residents of Kauyen Alu community in Tarauni Local Government Area and Fagge Local Government Area for their efforts in clearing the environment, including cemeteries, drainage channels, and surrounding areas, and urged other LGAs to emulate the shinning example.
The Chairman of Tarauni Local Government, Alhaji Ahmad Muhammad Sai Kure praised the commissioner for his commitment to environmental cleanliness.
He assured him of the local government’s continued efforts to eliminate open defecation and improve sanitation exercise within his domain.
During the exercise, the mobile court arrested 28 defaulters, imposing a total fine of ₦78,000 only to those who violated the sanitation laws.
